• Train like the masters: For centuries, artists have used life drawing to sharpen perception, boost problem-solving, and restore creative energy. It's a grounding flow state.

• Skip the translation: Photos are already flat as they're filtered by a camera. Drawing from life lets you see more, choose what matters most and interpret how to show it.

• Build innovation skills: In the age of AI, your ability to observe life, filter it through your own perspective, and create something only you can make feels so empowering.

Imagine leaving a session feeling centered, energized, and creatively recharged - regardless of how the drawings turned out.

You're ready to try life drawing but you've got a lot of questions…

"Do I need to be good at anatomy before I start?"

“Do I need to know anatomy first?”

"Will my drawings look stupid compared to everyone else's?"

“Will my drawings look bad compared to everyone else's?”

"What if I mess up every sketch in a session?"

"What if I can't draw fast enough during short poses?"

“What if I can’t draw fast enough?”

MY STORY
Ive spent over 1,000 hours in life drawing sessionsthey helped me grow a lot as an artist and entrepreneur. Its a kind of checkpoint: like the mats in martial arts, the page doesnt lie. You see where youre strong, where youre shaky, and where youve grown.

Im sharing these methods with friends and students to help them explore new territory in real life. When AI makes many artists doubt themselves, I find it so grounding to watch my own work appear in front of me. I trust you will too!

Hi, I’m Ben Weeks. I’ve worked with clients like The New York Times, Canada Goose, and Bloomberg, and taught at Sheridan College and Miami Ad School. Over 25 years as an artist/designer, I’ve found that life drawing is an excellent way to sharpen your eye and your instincts.

I created Drawing Upgrade after realizing I wanted to help someone who was nervous about joining a session. I booked a spot, but they didn’t show up. On the way home I thought, “How would I coach someone if I couldn’t be with them in person?” This guide is my answer everything I’d walk you through if we were side-by-side, so you can step into your first studio sessions with confidence.

Hi, I’m Ben Weeks. I have over 1000 hours of life drawing practice and am a professional illustrator with 25 years experience. I created Drawing Upgrade to help someone who enjoys drawing get their work to the next level.

YOU CAN DO THIS!

"What if I'm terrible and everyone judges me?"
Everyone starts somewhere. Most people are far too focused on their own work to judge yours. In fact, many experienced artists appreciate the freshness and energy beginners bring to the page—qualities they sometimes wish they could recapture.

"I'm freaked out about drawing nude models" That’s completely normal. Popular culture sometimes portrays life drawing as something romantic or edgy, but in reality it’s a professional, focused, and respectful space. Conversation is minimal. There's often a great playlist of mellow jazz. Inappropriate behaviour is never tolerated. Most people find that, after a few minutes, they’re so absorbed in their drawing that the nervousness fades.

"I don't have time to commit to regular sessions" You don’t have to. Even attending a session every few months will improve your skills and stretch your comfort zone. The mindset and exercises in Drawing Upgrade will help you get the most out of whatever time you do invest.

"Art is useless because computers can do it"
Even if that was true (you might want to check auction numbers to confirm that, paintings are still selling for millions of dollars and are considered an asset class by many sophisticated investors) art still trains humans to be better at identifying problems in the real world, making prototypes and adjustments to address them. Lead designers at top innovation and ai firms often benefit from this training. Machines can also lift heavy loads too, but it's still good for people to exercise at the gym. This is a different kind of gym.

YOU CAN
DO THIS!

What if I‘m terrible and everyone judges me?
Everyone starts somewhere. Your skill is not fixed but grows with practice. Others probably are more worried about their own work or insecure.

Art is useless because of ai.
Machines can lift heavy loads too, but it's still good for people to exercise at the gym. This is a different kind of gym. We still need to invent the future.

I‘m freaked out about naked people.

FAQ

I've never done any life drawing before - is this too advanced for me?

Absolutely not. This is designed for first-timers. Your only expectation should be to try it and see what happens. Everyone starts somewhere, and looking back on early work later becomes part of the joy.

What if I can't even draw a decent circle? Will this help someone at my level?

Yes. It's not about perfection but trying out playing in a new sandbox. Everyone's style is different and sometimes leaning into the awkward can have an endearing quality. Naive art can have a joyous quality in how shamelessly fresh and odd it might be. Art people LOVE odd.

I've done some figure drawing from photos/online - will this still be useful?

Drawing from a photograph is like cheating in a way because it's already been compressed into two dimensions for you by a camera. It's more challenging to see something in real life in full color with your eyes in 3 dimensions - there's extreme high resolution that you have to select which parts you'll emphasize. What you pick is what you're interested in.

What if there are no life drawing sessions in my area?

There are ways to organize sessions yourself. Even if it's just you and one friend who will pose for a few hours for you. They can be clothed of course if they prefer. You can also draw people in coffee shops, on trains, or anywhere people naturally pose.

Do I need expensive art supplies to get started?

No - the materials are under $40 for all you need to get going. If the place you're going already has drawing boards then the material cost might be about $10.

What if I buy this and still feel too nervous to actually go?

You can always try drawing in a mirror to apply some of the exercises, or drawing people in a coffee shop or on the subway. But a dedicated space set up for drawing with other artists is recommended. You can feel nervous and book a session anyway - it's okay to be nervous. Also, make sure you're well-rested and feeling physically good - fatigue makes everything harder.

What if I get burned out or feel overwhelmed during sessions?

Some people thrive with quick gesture drawings, others prefer longer poses for detailed work. You'll discover your strengths and can choose sessions that match your energy. Even in long poses, you can move around the room every 15-20 minutes for different angles instead of staying in one spot for hours.
