• Train like the masters: For centuries, artists have used life drawing to sharpen perception, boost problem-solving, and restore creative energy. It's a grounding flow state.
• Skip the translation: Photos are already flat as they're filtered by a camera. Drawing from life lets you see more, choose what matters most and interpret how to show it.
• Build innovation skills: In the age of AI, your ability to observe life, filter it through your own perspective, and create something only you can make feels so empowering.
Imagine leaving a session feeling centered, energized, and creatively recharged - regardless of how the drawings turned out.
You'll have drawings you're genuinely proud to show others AND the tools and mindset to keep improving from every session.
You're ready to try life drawing... but you've got a lot of questions.
MY STORY
I’ve spent over 1,000 hours in life drawing sessions—they helped me grow a lot as an artist and entrepreneur. It’s a kind of checkpoint: like the mats in martial arts, the page doesn’t lie. You see where you’re strong, where you’re shaky, and where you’ve grown.
I’m sharing these methods with friends and students to help them explore new territory in real life. When AI makes many artists doubt themselves, I find it so grounding to watch my own work appear in front of me. I trust you will too!

Hi, I’m Ben Weeks. I’ve worked with clients like The New York Times, Canada Goose, and Bloomberg, and taught at Sheridan College and Miami Ad School. Over 25 years as an artist/designer, I’ve found that life drawing is an excellent way to sharpen your eye and your instincts.
I created Drawing Upgrade after realizing I wanted to help someone who was nervous about joining a session. I booked a spot, but they didn’t show up. On the way home I thought, “How would I coach someone if I couldn’t be with them in person?” This guide is my answer — everything I’d walk you through if we were side-by-side, so you can step into your first studio sessions with confidence.
YOU CAN DO THIS!
"I'm freaked out about drawing nude models" That’s completely normal. Popular culture sometimes portrays life drawing as something romantic or edgy, but in reality it’s a professional, focused, and respectful space. Conversation is minimal. There's often a great playlist of mellow jazz. Inappropriate behaviour is never tolerated. Most people find that, after a few minutes, they’re so absorbed in their drawing that the nervousness fades.
"I don't have time to commit to regular sessions" You don’t have to. Even attending a session every few months will improve your skills and stretch your comfort zone. The mindset and exercises in Drawing Upgrade will help you get the most out of whatever time you do invest.
"What if I'm terrible and everyone judges me?"
Everyone starts somewhere. Most people are far too focused on their own work to judge yours. In fact, many experienced artists appreciate the freshness and energy beginners bring to the page—qualities they sometimes wish they could recapture.
"Art is useless because computers can do it"
Even if that was true (you might want to check auction numbers to confirm that, paintings are still selling for millions of dollars and are considered an asset class by many sophisticated investors) art still trains humans to be better at identifying problems in the real world, making prototypes and adjustments to address them. Lead designers at top innovation and ai firms often benefit from this training. Machines can also lift heavy loads too, but it's still good for people to exercise at the gym. This is a different kind of gym.
