Show the world what you see.

Show what you see.

Show the world
what you see.

• You are not a camera: Your drawings come from your imagination which shapes your perception.

• There's only one you: Your life shapes what you value and how you feel about what you see. What stands out to you as a special quality may be unseen by others until you emphasize it.

• Living in the now: Drawing from life lets you slow down, look closely as you reflect through action on what matters most to you in capturing a fleeting moment.

• You are not a camera: Your drawing comes from your imagination which shapes your perception.

• There's only one you: Your life informs what you value and choose to emphasize. Yet drawing also is a practice of recording what is.

• Living in the now: Drawing from life lets you slow down, look closely as you reflect through action on what matters most to you in capturing a fleeting moment.

Imagine walking out of a session with work that surprised you in a good way.

Imagine finishing a session with drawings you'd feel happy to show.

Hi, I’m Ben Weeks. As an illustrator and motion designer, I’ve worked with clients like The New York Times, Canada Goose, and Penguin Random House. I've taught at Sheridan College and Miami Ad School. Over 20 years as an artist, I found that drawing can be a place of refuge. A place to refine your creative intuition and discernment. But it also helps to draw with other people in a kind of community.

I created Drawing Upgrade to help someone about to try their first sessions. This guide is some of what I’d walk you through if we were side-by-side to help you get started life drawing.

Hi, I’m Ben Weeks. With over 1000 hours of life drawing practice and with 20 years as a professional illustrator, I created Drawing Upgrade to help give you get started life drawing.

FAQ

Yes, this is built for total beginners. It's not about perfection or talent; it's about starting. Life drawing isn't a test, it's a practice, and Drawing Upgrade gives you a plan so you can focus on the experience instead of worrying whether your lines look right. Even rough, naive-looking early work has its own charm — art people love odd.
The point was never just the picture. Life drawing sharpens the instrument AI can't replicate: your own eye, judgment, and taste. The people getting the best results from AI already know how to see.
There are ways to organize sessions yourself. Even if it's just you and one friend who will pose for a few hours for you. They can be clothed of course if they prefer. You can also draw people in coffee shops, on trains, or anywhere people naturally pose.
No - the materials are under $40 for all you need to get going. If the place you're going already has drawing boards then the material cost might be about $10.
You can always try drawing in a mirror to apply some of the exercises, or drawing people in a coffee shop or on the subway. But a dedicated space set up for drawing with other artists is recommended. You can feel nervous and book a session anyway - it's okay to be nervous. Also, make sure you're well-rested and feeling physically good - fatigue makes everything harder.
Some people thrive with quick gesture drawings, others prefer longer poses for detailed work. You'll discover your strengths and can choose sessions that match your energy. Even in long poses, you can move around the room every 15-20 minutes for different angles instead of staying in one spot for hours.
No. Life drawing isn't a test — it's a practice. You don't need to be "good" before you start. The whole point of Drawing Upgrade is to walk in with a plan so you can focus on the experience instead of worrying about whether your lines look right.
The short version: a large sketchpad (A3 minimum — newsprint is perfect and cheap), willow charcoal or soft pencils (2B–6B), a kneaded eraser, and clips to hold your paper. Leave the fancy supplies at home. The Guidebook has a full materials checklist so you're not guessing.
Years. That's the honest answer. But "getting good" isn't really the point of Drawing Upgrade. The point is learning to enjoy the process — to be present, to observe, and to leave a session feeling creatively recharged rather than frustrated. The skill develops over time because you keep showing up, not because you crammed a tutorial.
